The Welcome Event for New International PhD students took place last Tuesday, 20th November at the Maison de l’International of Grenoble. Organized by the International Students and Scholars Office - ISSO, and the Doctoral College, in partnership with the City of Grenoble, this event gathered 55 PhD students, who arrived over the past few weeks from all over the world!

Guided tour of the city center of Grenoble, theatre show and a buffet were offered during this welcoming time.

The event started by a guided tour visit of Grenoble City-center, to discover the curiosities of the historical heritage, from city-squares to traditional places.

The evening carried on at the Maison de l’International, located at the Lesdiguières mansion, near the city gardens.

The guests were first welcomed by greetings: Judith Peters, International relations manager for the Doctoral college, along with Élisa Glangeaud, International relations director for the ComUE UGA, reminded everyone about the long welcome tradition of International PhD students at the ComUE, who represent today 45% of the 3 700 enrolled doctoral students. Fundings for excellence scholarships, IDEX investments, so many strategic development projects of the ComUE UGA testifying of the importance of the challenges of welcoming and integrating these new researchers.

Then it was show time: Les Bandits Manchots, live performing arts company, managed to create a festive atmosphere thanks to their amazing improvised and participative show among a delighted audience.

Later on, Claus Habfast, vice-president in charge of Research, Higher Education, Innovation and International Affairs at Grenoble-Alpes Metropole and councilor at the city of Grenoble, underlined the close collaboration between the city of Grenoble and the Communauté Université Grenoble Alpes (ComUE UGA), working for the development of a territory among the richest in France in terms of innovation, research and scientific excellence.

The student association, Integre, then introduced briefly their action on campus, and it was time to enjoy some food at the buffet.

The evening finished around a buffet where all the new PhD students enjoyed talking to each other.

This welcoming event for new international PhD students, for its third edition, highlighted the importance of cultural diversity and human exchange at the service of scientific knowledge.
