Merging linguistic expertise to break down communication barriers across borders!
International, Partnerships, Research
This Trilateral research initiative bridges Nation Taiwan University, Université Grenoble Alpes and University of Tsukuba to revolutionize languages teaching and linguistics. Their mission: contributing to improving foreign language teaching practices.
PILE (Phraseology In Language Education: from French, Japanese and Mandarin corpora to classrooms) is a strategic research collaboration between Lidilem laboratory, Graduate Program of Teaching Chinese as a Second Language, and Center for Education of Global Communication (CEGLOC). Launched in 2025 as a laureate of the NTU-UGA-UT Trilateral Center, this project addresses the fact that authentic oral corpora are rarely used in language teaching despite their potential.
By pooling their expertise in using corpora in French, Chinese, and Japanese and Contrastive Analysis, in Second Language Acquisition and Communication Strategies and in Cognitive Linguistics, Construction Grammar and Second Language Acquisition, they are aiming to better integrate authentic corpus analysis into teaching materials.
Together, they are not just conducting research; we are building the scalable frameworks needed for a more Advanced future in Language Sciences, Language Teaching, and Corpus Linguistics.
Tangible Results
The PILE project, has generated significant outcomes that lay a strong foundation for continued collaboration in 2026. A research network among the three partner universities has been successfully launched, notably through the organization of a two-day workshop held on 5–6 March 2026 in Grenoble. The workshop has fostered collaboration not only among the core teams but also with external specialists in spoken corpora and phraseology acquisition, while actively involving early-stage researchers and PHD students.
In parallel, a dedicated project website and a comprehensive inventory of spoken corpora in French, Chinese, and Japanese have been developed, providing valuable resources for both research and teaching.
The continuation of PILE in 2026 will enable further corpus development and comparative analysis, expand international partnerships, and strengthen links between research and teaching.
